Who is Salma Hayek?
In 2000, she returned to more modest projects. She was part of the cast of the independent comedy-drama Time Code, written and directed by Mike Figgis; then of the small heist film Chain of Fools; had a small role in the multi-awarded choral drama Traffic, by Steven Soderbergh. Finally, she produced and starred in a new Spanish-language drama, A Dream Life, by Antonio Cuadri.
It was her work as a producer that finally allowed her to make her mark: in 2001, while starring in the Italian-British comedy-thriller, Hotel, once again written and directed by Mike Figgis, she was the producer and lead actress in In the Time of the Butterflies, a historical TV film revisiting the story of two sisters in the Dominican Republic.
At the same time, she was already working on the most important project of her career, the biopic Frida. The film was released in 2002, again under the banner of her production company Ventanarosa, and allows the actress to lend her features to the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. She even gives voice to the song La Bruja. Her performance earned her a nomination at the 2003 Oscars. With this project, she also confirmed her commitment to battered women and her fight against discrimination affecting the Latin American community in the United States. She also made Americans discover the problems linked to illegal immigration and the health care system.
Alongside this success, she made her directorial debut with a TV movie, which she also produced, The Maldonado Miracle, starring Peter Fonda and Mare Winningham. The production was a great success and Salma Hayek won the Daytime Emmy Awards for Best Director.
However, that same year, she returned to the big commercial productions. She reunited with Robert Rodriguez for two sequels: first the children’s adventure comedy Spy Kids 3: Mission 3D, then the neo-noir thriller Once Upon a Time in Mexico… Desperado 2 in which she sings the song Siente mi amor.
In 2004, she shared the poster of the action comedy Coup d’éclat, in front of the camera of Brett Ratner. Then she trusted the writer / director Robert Towne for the historical drama Ask the dust, which she shares the poster with the rising value Colin Farrell. In the meantime, she officiates, again, as a director for the needs of a video clip of the singer Prince, Te Amo Corazon. In 2006, she went international again: first by sharing the poster of the sexy action comedy Bandidas, produced by Frenchman Luc Besson; then by keeping a foot in Hollywood with the historical drama Lost Hearts, written and directed by Todd Robinson, which allows her to lend her features to the serial killer Martha Beck; and finally by adapting the Colombian TV series Yo Soy Betty la Fea (I am Betty the ugly) and creates Ugly Betty, an American series about the trials and tribulations of a young girl with an unattractive physique in the fashion world.
The series – of which Salma Hayek is co-executive producer and in which she plays a secondary role for a few episodes – is a great success with the public and wins several awards, including the 2007 Golden Globe for Best Comedy Series and Best Actress in a Comedy Series for its lead actress America Ferrera.
In 2007, she stood out by lending her image to the famous Italian brand of alcoholic drink Campari and posed for the calendar. In April of the same year, Salma Hayek, on the strength of the success of Ugly Betty, was appointed CEO of Ventanazul, a joint venture with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The new company aims to produce films that have Latin American themes but attract a wider audience. In terms of acting, she was content with a small appearance in the musical Across the Universe, by Julie Taymor.
She concludes this decade with a secondary role in a big production aimed at teenagers, the fantasy comedy The Vampire’s Assistant, co-written and directed by Paul Weitz. The series Ugly Betty ends after four seasons. The actress will have multiplied her appearances in season 1, even receiving a nomination at the Emmy Awards in the best guest category in 2007.
The years 2010 will be placed under the seal of openly commercial projects, mainly comedies.
She is first in the poster of the comedy buddies forever, Dennis Dugan, carried by Adam Sandler. Then she found Antonio Banderas for the dubbing of the animated film from Dreamworks Studios, The Pussycat. She dubs the same year another animated film, The Pirates! Good for nothing, bad for everything, which was released in 2012. That same year released another comedy potache, Prof poids lourd, with Kevin James in the lead role.
At the same time, however, she managed to defend three more ambitious projects: in 2011, taking the lead roles in the French drama Americano, written and directed by Mathieu Demy, and the Spanish black comedy A Lucky Day, by Álex de la Iglesia. And in 2012, playing again a cruel and sexy woman of power for the needs of the thriller Savages, by Oliver Stone.
In 2013, however, she is of the gang of Buddies Forever 2, again by Dennis Dugan; in 2014, she makes a cameo in the children’s musical Muppets Most Wanted, by James Bobin and reunites with Pierce Brosnan for a romantic comedy, Teach Me Love.
In 2015, she played the title role in the low-budget action film, Everly, by Joe Lynch, which was released directly to video; and shared the poster of the historical drama Insurrection with Adrian Brody, which went unnoticed. This year will be marked by a return to more ambitious projects: she plays the lead role in a fantastic and horrific thriller, Tale of Tales, co-written and directed by the Italian Matteo Garrone. She delivers a disturbing performance in the role of the Queen of Longtrellis.
The following year she moved on to the shooting of an American comedy-drama Beatriz at Dinner, directed by Miguel Arteta. She plays the title role, and the release is scheduled for early 2017. That same year, she played an eccentric supporting role, the wife of Samuel L. Jackson, in the action comedy Hitman and Bodyguard, also carried by Ryan Reynolds. Only one week after its release, the film is already profitable.
On September 21, 2007, she gave birth to Valentina Paloma, from her relationship with François-Henri Pinault, CEO of the luxury group Kering, formerly Pinault-Printemps-Redoute (PPR), and son of François Pinault. The couple got married on February 14, 2009.
